NEW YORK STATE CENSUS

The record is a printed form that was filled in by hand by the enumerator. The schedules are usually arranged by county and political subdivisions.

State censuses were created by the state of New York and were taken about every ten years beginning in 1795. These records do not cover the entire population of New York.

The census was compiled to obtain a count and description of the population of the state of New York. Use the information with caution, since the information may have been given to a census taker by any member of the family or by a neighbor. Some information may have been incorrect or deliberately falsified.

The 1892 New York Census is invaluable because the 1890 United States Census was destroyed in fire. There was a Police Census taken in the county of New York (Manhattan) in 1890, but those images are very difficult to view and were not indexed at the time. However, the transcriptions are posted here and are located after the 1915 census information.

HISTORY

Colonial censuses were created by the state of New York and were taken about every ten years beginning in 1690. State censuses began to be taken about every ten years in 1795. Unfortunately, many of the early census records have been lost.

The census information does not cover the entire population of the state of New York. Some of the modern-day counties did not exist in New York State at the time of the census. New York City organized its five boroughs in 1898. New York created Nassau County also in that same year.
